Environmental Factors and Paediatric Cough Identification

Cough is prevalent in children of all ages globally, often linked to viral respiratory infections, but also influenced by bacterial infections, allergies, environmental factors, and asthma.1 This session explored environmental triggers and determinants of chronic cough in children, detailing diagnostic algorithms and management strategies. Discussions included the impact on children's quality of life, the current paediatric respiratory infection landscape in polluted India, and associations between environmental allergens and cough2 alongside long-term residual effects of childhood exposure to airway irritants predisposing to chronic cough in adulthood. The importance of environmental or allergy assessments, patient history, and diagnostic tools (e.g., chest radiography, spirometry, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, chest CT, fibreoptic bronchoscopy, etc.) in identifying causes was emphasised. Strategies to reduce cough-inducing triggers, such as environmental controls, allergen reduction, tobacco cessation, and HEPA filtration were also addressed, alongside clinical evidence on preventive strategies for environment-induced cough while highlighting the role of allergen immunotherapy and probiotics in managing and alleviating cough symptoms in children.
